Medical Repatriation to and from Spain

Spain and the Spanish islands

A coordinated medical journey between Spain and destinations worldwide.

ESAT coordinates medical repatriation to and from Spain for patients who need clinical support during travel after illness, injury or treatment. We bring the medical assessment, transport arrangements and handover into one bed-to-bed plan.

Requests may involve Madrid, Barcelona, Málaga, Alicante, Valencia and other mainland locations, as well as the Balearic and Canary Islands. Every journey is reviewed against the patient’s needs, the destination and operational availability.

A transfer can connect Spain with the UK, another European country, Australia, Asia, the Middle East, the Americas or another suitable destination. We support families arranging a return home and hospitals, insurers and assistance companies coordinating patient transfers.

For an island transfer, the route may need a local ambulance, a flight to a suitable airport and onward transport at the destination. We plan the complete journey rather than the flight alone.

Medical transport to and from Spain

A mainland journey and an island departure can require different arrangements. ESAT reviews the patient’s current condition and the complete route before recommending transport.

Medical escorts from Spain

A medical escort on a scheduled flight may suit a clinically stable patient who needs professional support. Seating, airport assistance, oxygen or equipment requirements and airline medical clearance are assessed before travel.

Air ambulance to and from Spain

A dedicated air ambulance may be considered when the patient needs care that cannot be supported on a scheduled flight. The aircraft, medical team, equipment and ground transfers are planned around the case.

Road and island connections

For suitable mainland routes, long-distance road ambulance may be an option. Transfers involving Mallorca, Ibiza, Tenerife or other islands require separate planning for the sea or air connection and local ground transport.

Planning a transfer from Spain

1. Current clinical information

We review the treating team’s medical report, mobility and care requirements, proposed timing and destination.

2. A route that supports the patient

The plan accounts for local road transport, any island connection, airport assistance, medical clearance and the care needed throughout travel.

3. Continuity at the destination

We coordinate the receiving arrangements and onward transport so the patient reaches the agreed hospital or destination with an appropriate handover.

Spain medical repatriation FAQs

Can ESAT arrange medical repatriation from the Canary or Balearic Islands?

We can assess transfers involving the Spanish islands. Tell us the island, hospital and destination so we can review local ambulance arrangements, suitable flights or aircraft and any connecting sectors. The final plan depends on clinical suitability and availability.

Can a patient return from Spain on a commercial flight?

A scheduled flight with a medical escort may be suitable following clinical review and airline approval. Business-class seating, mobility assistance and other support can be considered where appropriate; the flight must meet the patient’s care requirements.

Can an ambulance travel from mainland Spain to the UK?

For a clinically suitable patient, a road ambulance journey may be considered. ESAT reviews the distance, planned crossing, crew arrangements, stops and patient comfort alongside any flight-based options.

Does ESAT only arrange transfers from Spain to the UK?

No. ESAT coordinates transfers both into and out of Spain, connecting suitable destinations worldwide. Please give us the departure location and receiving destination when you enquire.

How much does medical repatriation from Spain cost?

The quotation depends on the route, transport method, medical team, care and equipment requirements, urgency and ground transport. An island connection or multiple flight sectors may affect the plan and price. We provide a tailored quotation after reviewing the case.

Can ESAT work with my travel insurer?

We can liaise with your insurer or assistance company about the proposed transfer and supporting documentation. Ask them to confirm cover and any required authorisation before making a booking.
