France and European connections
Medical Repatriation to and from France
Medical support throughout the journey, by road or air.
ESAT coordinates medical repatriation to and from France, bringing together the treating team, appropriate medical transport and the receiving destination. We support patients travelling after illness or injury and those moving between healthcare facilities.
Enquiries may involve Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Nice, Toulouse, Bordeaux, other mainland locations or Corsica. The route and transport method depend on clinical assessment, distance, permissions and operational availability.
For suitable journeys between mainland France, the UK and neighbouring European countries, road ambulance can be considered alongside scheduled flights with a medical escort or a dedicated air ambulance.
Our service also supports transfers between France and destinations worldwide, including Australia, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas. One team coordinates the clinical plan and transport at both ends.
Medical transport to and from France
The most appropriate route depends on the care needed throughout the journey. ESAT compares the practical road and air options for the individual case.
Road ambulance from France
A specialist road ambulance may offer a continuous journey for a patient who cannot travel independently. We plan the route, crossing arrangements where needed, crew, equipment and receiving handover.
Medical escorts on scheduled flights
For a clinically stable patient, a commercial flight with a medical escort may be appropriate. The assessment covers airport transfers, mobility, seating, care needs and airline medical clearance.
Air ambulance transfers
A dedicated medical aircraft may be considered when the patient needs care that cannot be provided on a scheduled flight or when road travel is unsuitable. Ground transport is coordinated with the flight.

From the French treating team to the receiving destination
1. Clinical review and discharge planning
We obtain the current medical information and liaise with the treating team about the patient’s travel needs and proposed discharge.
2. Road or air route selection
We consider journey duration, handling, clinical support, equipment and transfer stages before agreeing a suitable route.
3. Receiving arrangements
The destination and any required receiving-hospital acceptance are confirmed alongside onward transport and the final clinical handover.
France medical repatriation FAQs
Can ESAT arrange a road ambulance from France to the UK?
We can assess a road transfer where the patient’s condition and journey requirements make it appropriate. The plan includes the road route, any ferry or tunnel crossing, medical crew and onward handover. Timing depends on the case and available arrangements.
Is a road ambulance always preferable to flying?
No single method suits every patient. ESAT reviews the clinical needs, distance, likely journey time, handling and available support. Road ambulance, a medical escort on a scheduled flight and air ambulance are considered as appropriate.
Can ESAT coordinate a transfer from a regional hospital in France?
Yes, subject to clinical review and operational availability. Tell us the hospital, town and intended destination. Local road transport can be incorporated into an air transfer, or a complete road journey may be considered.
Can you arrange transfers involving Corsica?
We can review requests involving Corsica, including local ambulance transport and a suitable air or sea connection where appropriate. Island arrangements are assessed separately from a mainland road journey.
Can ESAT transfer a patient into France for further care?
ESAT can coordinate an inbound transfer to an agreed hospital or destination. Any required acceptance by the receiving facility, medical documentation and travel arrangements must be confirmed before departure.
What affects the cost of medical repatriation from France?
The departure and destination, transport method, medical crew, care requirements, equipment, urgency and any crossings or flight connections affect the quotation. We provide a case-specific price after reviewing the requirements.
